Nick and Jeff McCoy and Larry Kauer were the newest to try cutting even though their names are familiar to the SDCHA. Special Thanks to Steve and Lisa Mayer for providing the food, Doug Shepherd for the cattle and Barb Halligan for Video Taping the clinic and show. The next week-end was the SDCHA Summer Show in Huron, SD. Although it was small, it was fun and again the newcomers were showing in the largest classes. The cattle were GREAT! JUNE 2008 Howdy Y’all, Sorry... We’ve been spending a lot of time down south. It seems like we haven’t been on Dakota soil much this year. Fuel prices remain up in the clouds. Several cutters are making tough decisions such as; which show to go to, or if they should go at all. Hopefully we will see many of you at the upcoming shows and futurities in the area and region. We are happy to have some shows coming up quickly. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! On July 5th & 6th, SDCHA is having a show in Huron, SD at the SD State Fair Grounds. Then the Diamond M Ranch will host a 3-Day Cutting Clinic with Chubby Turner on August 6th-8th, a Limited Aged Event on August 8th, and a full slate of week-end classes on August 9th & 10th. Details are in the NCHA Chatter and on the SDCHA website. Call early for motel and stalls. There are only a few more spaces open in the clinic as of June 15th. If interested, call me ASAP at 605-775-9080 or 605-830-9080. Then the SDCHA will host another week-end show again in Huron on August 16th & 17th. I’m sure everyone is busy with futurity horses too. Thanks again to North Ridge Ranch or hosting the pre-work last month to benefit the SDCHA. It was a huge success and everyone had some great works on their younger horses. The SDCHA is producing the SDCHA Limited Aged Event in Huron, SD on September 10th – 12th.Happy Cutting, Margaret McCoy May 2008 Hi cutters! Hope everybody is doing fine. I would imagine that most of the new foals have arrived and breeding season is well underway. We would like to congratulate the entries at This year there is going to be a lot of discussion at the NCHA Convention about the proposal to change the AM and Non Pro classes if you have an opinion please go to the convention and/or contact your national directors (Don Strain 605 259 3320 or Barb Halligan 605 301 4920). This could change the classes that people show in. A big thank you to Jerry and Carol Ward for hosting the LAE practice works at their Northridge Ranch. Not only great for our area young horses, but they also donated the proceeds to SDCHA! In closing, a SD cutter passed away this month and we would like to offer condolences to the Strain family of March 2008 Dear SDCHA Cutters, A lot has been discussed and changed over the last month but the Directors are driven to improving the shows and cutting experience while cutting in South Dakota. The directors had a meeting this past week and discussed several items. Including a Youth Scholarship Program. The SDCHA raised over $2,000 at the Black Hills Stock Show Cutting Silent Auction. This money will be used entirely toward Youth Scholarships. WOW! Thanks for all your support! The next show will be April 13th in Burke, SD at the Sutton Ranch. There is NO PRE-ENTRY for this show as the Suttons always have plenty of cattle. Jim Halligan will be the Judge and Barb Halligan will video. The Halligans will donate these services for Billie Sutton who was partially paralyzed in a horse accident last fall. The next show will be April 19th & 20th show in Platte, SD. Call Jackie Husted to reserve stalls and pre-enter by April 16th. There will be a practice on Friday afternoon. Call Kyle Krause for details about the practice. The donations that have been given to help raise the ADDED MONEY proved to be a success. There was lots of talk about how large the payouts were for the classes at the March Platte show. Donations are growing ans we want to thank Gerry Ward and the North Ridge Ranch od Pierre, SD who are sponsoring a Pre-work May 26-28th. All proceeds from this pre-work will be donated to the SDCHA. Thanks again to Pete's Custom Conversion Trailers for donating $3,000 and to The Diamond M Ranch / Jeff & Margaret McCoy who have matched Pete's Trailers' donation. The Diamond M Ranch show in August will have lots of added money and again great cattle. A Limited Aged show on Friday and a Full NCHA Week-end Show on Sat & Sunday, Aug 8-10th. The Chubby Turner clinic is rapidly filling up for August 6-8th. Call Margaret today if you want to reserve a spot. Portable stalls are being rented so no one will have horses in panels. Also, the plans for the newsletter is again changing. The Directors have decided to follow in our neighbours footsteps and post our information in The Wrangler. We feel this will be a less expensive alternative and also a benefit by giving the Association some additional Advertising. The Wrangler comes out twice monthly so we can update our information as needed for no additional charge. Of course, I will continue to keep our website going for all us computer geeks. See you all at the next Cutting. Margaret McCoy FEBRUARY 2008 Dear SDCHA Cutters, This letter is a bit late and I apologize in advance for the delay. The January show in Platte was cancelled due to lack of entries and the weather was also a factor. Our Pre-entry Program saved the Association from taking a huge loss and also saved several people from travelling and then not having anyone else entered in their class. The Annual Awards Banquet was held Friday night, Feb 1st in Rapid City, SD. Many thanks go out to Mary London for lining up the Elks Club and also to Tom Kauer who did a great job getting the awards. Thanks also to Bonnie Gesinger for helping Tom. Lots of really nice awards were given out to those who competed and were placing in the top 4 of their class. A complete list is attached. The Black Hills Stock Show Cutting was held Feb 2nd & 3rd in Rapid City. Ground was good and Saturday ran smooth, but the cattle were really tough on Sunday. So remember, SDCHA has made Pre-Entry of all classes a requirement and classes are rotated to give everyone the chance to cut fresh cattle in their class during the year. However, if you choose to not pre-enter, the number of cattle reserved for the show will be fewer and the chance of cutting 2 or 3 time re-run cattle is greater. Fresh cattle are NOT guaranteed by SDCHA. Look at the schedule of rotation on the SDCHA website and make your decision to enter earlier if needed. The next show will be March 15-16 in Platte. Call Jackie Husted to reserve stalls and pre-enter by March 12th. Then plans are being made for an April 19th & 20th show in Huron, SD. (This show will be at Platte, SD ) The State Fair grounds have put HEAT in the barn!! YEA! Lots of stalls and heat will hopefully bring lots of entries to our shows. Also, donations have been given to help raise the ADDED MONEY in our upcoming shows. Jeff McCoy has spoken with Pete's Custom Conversion Trailers and a donation of $3,000 is coming from Pete's to help our Association. The Diamond M Ranch / Jeff & Margaret McCoy have agreed to match Pete's Trailers' donation. Plans are underway for another cutting in August at the Diamond M Ranch in Burke, SD. Chubby Turner will do another clinic as well. Call early as spots are already filling up. Portable stalls are being rented so no one will have horses in panels. Also, this newsletter is going to be sent out via email unless I hear that you would rather have it mailed starting after the March show. So... if you do not want this newsletter emailed to you, call or email me to let me know to keep you on the "Snail Mail" list. If you do not also receive this as an email and would like to have it emailed, please send me your email address to let me know. See you all at the next Cutting. Margaret McCoy
